Which should I buy, glass or acrylic?
Glass is the most difficult to see through, so we recommend that you
order it for installations where a person will be observing through it.
Acrylic is reflective both ways and is more transparent, making it ideal
for infinity effects. It is also much easier to film through using a
camcorder because it has less tint than the glass.
How Can A One Way Mirror Be Detected?
How to Tell
If a Dressing Room Mirror is a One Way Mirror
A one way mirror is a useful tool when use for its intended purpose. one
way mirrors are generally used in public facilities such as police
headquarters for interrogation and in retail venues to prevent theft of
inventory. They can also be used in the domestic capacity to provide
home security. The one way mirror is a very useful invention with many
advantages however there are drawbacks when a one way mirror is used by
unscrupulous people for inappropriate purposes. There are people who use
one way mirrors to invade the privacy of others by installing the
mirrors in dressing rooms, bathrooms, hotel rooms, and other areas where
a one way mirror is unethical.
There are ways to tell whether or not a one way mirror is installed and
there are conflicting views over which method of determination is the
best. Many people have challenged the commonly known fingernail test
with other methods which will help you test for a one way mirror. Here
we will take a look at the different tests that are usually performed to
identify a dressing room mirror as a one way mirror:
The Common Finger Investigation
As mentioned earlier the finger test has been deemed the most common way
to tell whether or not a mirror is a two way or ordinary mirror.
Although other methods have made reference to the fact that this test is
unreliable and other ways are better, some will argue that the
fingernail test is the best method.
Regardless, the fingernail test involves placing your fingernail flush
against the mirror and observing the reflection of your finger in the
mirror. If no space exists between your fingernail and the reflection
then the mirror is a one way mirror. If the mirror is a second surface
ordinary mirror then you will see a gap between your fingernail and the
reflection. This is because ordinary mirrors have a layer of glass to
provide protection for the reflective layer.
The reason this test is challenged by others is because of some of the
elements can render the test unreliable such as the lighting in the
room, the manner in which the mirror is positioned, and sometimes the
mirror’s size. These external influences can affect your judgment when
you try to determine whether or not you are looking into a one way
mirror.
Methods That Challenge the Finger Test
The other percentage of people that challenge the fingernail test say
there are better and more reliable ways to identify a one way mirror.
These methods involve the actual physical appearance of the mirror
coupled with a few different types of tests which will help you tell the
difference between a one way mirror and an ordinary mirror.
If you think about the crime shows that you watch on television, one way
mirrors are used during the interrogation process as well as the process
for a witness identifying a criminal. When the potential criminal is in
the interrogation room you will notice that the room is brightly lit and
it appears as if there is an ordinary mirror on the wall. On the other
side are the police who are watching over the interrogation process and
the room they are in is darker. This is how the concept of a one way
mirror works which allows you to conduct tests based on these criteria.
Turn Off the Lights: To test for a
one way mirror turn off the lights in the room and then hold a
flashlight up against the mirror. If the mirror is a one way mirror you
will be able to see a room on the other side and perhaps someone
watching you. If you cannot see a room on the other side it is likely
the mirror is a conventional mirror.
Check the Installation: As a
general rule, one way mirrors are usually recessed back into the wall to
allow for functions on both side of the glass. A conventional mirror is
commonly mounted directly on the surface of the wall. There are however
exceptions to this rule with people who are really unscrupulous by
cutting a hole in the wall which is significantly smaller than the size
of the one way mirror and then mounting the mirror over the hole. Unless
you take it upon yourself to try and look behind the mirror the hole may
go undetected.
Make a Tunnel: Another method for
testing for a one way mirror is to place your hands around your eyes to
create a tunnel effect and then press them up against the mirror to
create a darkened space. If the mirror is two way, the room will be
lighter on the other side and you should be able to see a room through
the glass.
The Knocking Test: If a mirror is
two way it will sound hollow when you knock on it since there is a room
on both sides of the mirror with no wall in between. If it is an
ordinary mirror the sound will not be hollow due to the wall behind the
mirror.
Keep in mind that you should be cautious when using a public dressing
room due to the fact that one way mirror tests are not entirely
foolproof. If the mirror is two way it can also have a small observation
device installed and the same thing rings true for an ordinary mirror.
The best way to protect yourself from unwanted spies is to continually
remain aware and sharpen your skills on testing for a one way mirror
when entering a dressing room.
